The movies running away with the box office are "indie ahh" horror flicks, tuned to Generation Zed. Quarantine sorta permanently broke the theatre habit for Gabe I think, though he'll occasionally lurch out of his cavern for something his larvae might be interested in. By comparison, there are people in my neighborhood's younger cadre who are, like, members of AMC Stubs and shit. They love going to the Goddamn movies. And I'd bet that a strong part of the take for films like Obsession and Backrooms - which Gabriel will not be seeing - are people who were essentially robbed of the ritual because a actual horror movie was taking place worldwide.
I used to use Chrome as my browser until it started hard-locking the machine in a way I could never figure out, and I sorta like figuring out this kind of stuff. I switched to Edge because it's also Chrome - or, Chromium I guess - which worked fine until that started… not crashing, but just disappearing? As in, you'd be using it and it would just go away, after a random interval, like it heard its mom and it was time to go home. At that point I could find a third browser, or I could nuke the machine from orbit, historically the only way to achieve domain specific certainty.
Or I could install Linux.
I had used Linux Mint a couple years ago to revitalize an old Surface which had become curmudgeonly in its dotage, and was surprised at how humane the whole process had become. Valve's investments in game compatibility pursuant to their hardware aims have payloads well beyond the Steam Deck, whose price has recently increased to nearly four billion dollars - technically three ninety-nine, ninety-nine, ninety-nine, ninety-nine, nine. And that's the one with 512gb storage!
I did need to learn a couple words, magic ones, but once I booted the Bazzite installer off a stick and engaged in some light partition-related sorcery via a second bootable stick with Gparted I've been on it for a little over a week or so. I don't need any specific software packages to do what I do, so I'm a good case; the designers probably wouldn't be satisfied with it, nor would Gorbiriel. This isn't his kink. There are a few games you can't play for Anti-Cheat reasons, there are simply some dicks this OS won't suck. I always have the old partition if I really, really want to play Fortnite I guess but I have been startled by how the transition has gone. Now that it's installed, I never think about it. It's early days yet, but that's probably the best compliment I could pay.
(CW)TB out.
