The family that plays together

I tweeted out over the weekend that my son was voting for his mother at the end of our Overwatch rounds rather than for me. I had a few folks ask how we managed to all play together and it's true that we have three PS4's in the house. Some people might consider this excessive but that's not how I see it. For me it is an investment in a family activity. I wouldn't feel bad if I bought us all skis and we spent every weekend with the kids up on the mountain. This is what we do together. Videogames are an opportunity for Kara and I to spend hours with the kids playing and talking. If I ask Gabe what he did in school over dinner I get a shrug and a "nothing". Between Overwatch rounds or during a Destiny Strike I get the real stories though.

It Sucked Basically

Jesus Christ. I thought for sure that as an "introductory class," they'd be taking it easy on us; that they would be incentivized to trick us into thinking it was something we were capable of. So that we would, like, come back.

Since 2016

One sees this configuration - a German hyperknight, who acts as an energy carapace for a sentient gun person - with great frequency. Occasionally, the hyperknight might provide shell services for a mechanically inclined Swedish dwarf.

On Demand

Flatev is like a Keurig, but instead of squeezing out an opaque, coffee-adjacent ichor, it microbakes tiny corn disks. That's sort of the form factor, now: tools for living, contained within deployable ammunition.

Aftermarket

I have had tons of Star Wars ships for awhile, but nobody to play with really; they sit beautifully on the shelf, LIKE MY DREAMS. Is that too much? Is it the capitalization, or the twee sentiment? In any case, X-Wing is a neat game with robust genes - so robust, in fact, that its systemic brood is multitudinous. Star Trek: Attack Wing, for example, is the same bones, but virtuously and uniquely executed. Dungeons And Dragons: Attack Wing I haven't played, but incorporates ground combat; it might be unfair and superficial to include Plaid Hat's Tail Feathers in this list, more of a cousin by marriage maybe, but it's at least adjacent to the greater constellation. Oh! And Sails of Glory. I, uh… I like skirmishy wargames. Primarily because they're more likely to actually get played, wherever my deeper affections may lie.

Optimal

This is only for the comic! I play Roadhog or Torbjörn, unless we're doing well and I feel comfortable experimenting - Soldier 76 and Reinhardt are both robust ships of the line type champs, or heroes I guess, everybody has to have their name for it; I'm partial to Brutals, myself. Reinhardt is a nice tarpit and Soldier 76 is fuckin' workhorse. I want to have them in my back pocket.

Instagram

A little while back I started using Instagram again. I've been posting lots of sketches and WIP stuff. If you like seeing the behind the scenes stuff and watching comics come together then you should check it out.

Invasive Species

I want to emphasize from the outset that I bear these birds no ill will. I am a friend to birds. And I completely understand why they might love my fucking vent: I live in a what is functionally a giant tree, of comparatively cavernous internal volume, and it has a little hole in it which occasionally emits warm, fragrant air. If I made nests, I would make one inside this vent. Like, forthwith.

Renewables

I think we're at the end of Doom now; or, if there is something worse than the thing we're fighting now, I don't know how much I want to see it. Jesus Christ, people. If we can pulp this Hell Person, I'm of a mind to head straight back to the main menu and jump into a new campaign. Gabriel has suggested he does not do this; I don't do it either.

Penny Arcade Coloring Book

Coloring books are a big deal at my house. My wife likes to chill out and color in her Frozen coloring book at night while we watch TV. Obviously my little one likes them too but the reality is that all sorts of people want to color these days. So I thought it might be fun to make a Penny Arcade coloring book and I wanted to see what you all thought of the idea since you would be the ones doing the coloring.

DOOM Multiplayer

DOOM is fantastic. I'm just about done with the single player campaign after putting 8 or so hours into it. I'm already planning on going back and playing it again on a harder difficulty which is something I NEVER do. I've read a lot of good stuff about DOOM which makes me super happy but a bunch of the reviews seem to think the multiplayer is no fun. I decided to take a break from the campaign on Saturday and ended up playing multi for three straight hours. I could not stop! I played a bit this afternoon and set up a stream. Here's the video in case your interested in what the multi looks like.

Schismatic

I saw Batman v Superman and didn't hate it as much as I was supposed to. It was mostly confusing, honestly; my first edit pass on this script would have involved a machete. Writing is incredibly cheap, I'll never understand why you would film that script but I'm typing in the dark up in Seattle and not supine in the blood channels of some Los Angeles ziggurat. Maybe there is something about being drowned in unholy blood that illuminates their decision making process.
